Do’s and Don’ts for Designing Text for Vinyl Decals
Vinyl decals are cut, not printed, so the best designs use bold lettering, clean shapes and clear spacing. Very thin lines, intricate fonts and tiny details can be difficult to cut and may not apply well. See below for some examples of best-practice vinyl decal text.

Good Vinyl Font example
Bold strokes and simple shapes are easiest to cut and apply.
Average Vinyl Font example
Thinner strokes can work, but these need larger sizes and require a careful application.
Poor Vinyl Font example
Ultra-thin details are difficult to apply and may not last well. This would not be printed due to these limitations.
Important: Because decals are cut from a single sheet of coloured vinyl, colour options are limited to our preset vinyl colours rather than custom CMYK or RGB mixes.
Artwork & File Setup Guidelines
Accepted file formats
We recommend supplying your artwork as:
SVG
AI (Adobe Illustrator)
PDF (vector-based)
These formats preserve vector paths, which are essential for vinyl cutting.
Text & outlines (vector artwork)
If your design includes text, it must be converted to vector shapes (outlines) before upload. This ensures your lettering cuts exactly as intended.
Adobe Illustrator:
Select your text → Type → Create Outlines
Inkscape:
Select your text → Path → Object to Path
Once outlined, text becomes a shape rather than editable text, allowing it to cut correctly.
Canva files
⚠ Designing in Canva
Canva designs often export as raster images, which are not suitable for vinyl cutting.
If you are using Canva:
- Export your design as a .SVG
- Ensure it is simple, high-contrast. Text-based or line art.
- Be aware that raster images may not be suitable for detailed or small lettering
Best practice
If possible, recreating your design in a vector program is strongly recommended for best results.

Photographs or raster-only artwork (e.g. JPGs) are not suitable for cut vinyl decals. Vinyl cutting requires vector paths, not pixels.
Size & line thickness
Minimum recommended stroke / letter thickness: 2mm
Very thin lines, fine details, and delicate serif fonts can be difficult to cut, weed, and apply. The thinner and smaller your design elements are, the harder they are to apply cleanly and the less durable they may be over time. Thicker strokes provide more adhesive surface area, which improves adhesion and longevity.
For best results, choose:

What is vinyl lettering?
Vinyl lettering is precision-cut adhesive vinyl with no background. Each letter or shape is individually cut and supplied on transfer tape, allowing for easy installation and a clean, professional finish that looks painted onto the surface.
What surfaces can vinyl lettering be applied to?
Vinyl lettering works best on smooth, clean surfaces including windows, glass, painted walls, metal, plastic, vehicles, boats and signs. For best adhesion, surfaces should be free from dirt, dust and oils.
Is vinyl lettering suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. Our premium vinyl is weather-resistant, UV-stable and designed for both indoor and outdoor applications. It can withstand Australian conditions and maintain its appearance for years when properly applied.
Can vinyl lettering be applied to the inside of a window?
Yes. We can produce reverse-cut lettering designed to be applied to the inside of a window and read correctly from the outside.
Can vinyl lettering be used on shop windows?
Yes, vinyl lettering can be used on shop front windows. For clear glass, we recommend selecting the reverse-cut option so that the vinyl is applied to the inside of the glass.
Can vinyl lettering be used on vehicles?
Yes, we recommend cleaning your vehicle first to remove dust and dirt.
What's the difference between vinyl lettering and printed stickers?
Longevity. Vinyl stickers are designed to last for years outside and have far greater longevity than stickers that may need replacing after a few months.
Why choose vinyl lettering over stickers for curved or complex surfaces?
Vinyl lettering is thinner and more flexible than printed stickers, allowing it to conform better to curved and irregular surfaces.
Does coloured vinyl last longer than printed stickers?
In many applications, yes. Scratches are often less visible on coloured vinyl because the material is coloured throughout, while scratches on printed stickers can reveal the white vinyl beneath the printed ink.
Does vinyl lettering leave residue when removed?
Vinyl lettering may leave some adhesive residue behind, particularly if it has been in place for a long time or exposed to heat and weather. In most cases, any residue can be removed easily using an adhesive remover such as Goo Gone, warm soapy water, or rubbing alcohol. Applying gentle heat with a hair dryer (or a heat gun on a very low setting) can also help soften the adhesive, making both the vinyl and any remaining residue easier to remove.
How long does vinyl lettering last?
The lifespan depends on the surface, exposure and environmental conditions, but quality outdoor vinyl can typically last several years when correctly installed and maintained.
How do I apply vinyl lettering?
Simply clean the surface, position the lettering, remove the backing paper, apply using a squeegee/ vinyl tool or credit card, then peel away the transfer tape. Watch our easy installation video.
Can I install vinyl lettering myself?
Absolutely. Vinyl lettering is designed for DIY installation and most applications can be completed by one person with basic tools such as a squeegee, masking tape and a clean cloth. Watch our easy installation video. We also offer an installation kit.
Can vinyl lettering be removed?
Yes. Vinyl lettering can generally be removed without damaging properly prepared surfaces. The ease of removal depends on factors such as the age of the vinyl, the surface type, and exposure to weather and sunlight.
Applying gentle heat with a hair dryer (or a heat gun on a very low setting) helps soften the adhesive, making the vinyl easier to peel away. Any remaining adhesive residue can usually be removed with an adhesive remover such as Goo Gone, warm soapy water, or rubbing alcohol.
For best results, remove the vinyl slowly and carefully to minimise residue and ensure a clean finish.
Can I reuse vinyl lettering after removing it?
No. Vinyl lettering is designed for permanent application and cannot typically be reused once removed.
Can I use my own artwork or logo?
Yes. Simply upload your artwork and we will cut it directly from vinyl. For the best results, artwork should have clean lines and solid shapes. Contact us if you need assistance preparing your file.
What file types do you accept?
Vector files such as AI, EPS, SVG and PDF generally produce the best results. High-resolution PNG files may also be suitable depending on the design. If your file includes text, please export the item as a shape.
Can you cut intricate designs and small text?
Yes. We can produce highly detailed lettering and graphics, including intricate designs and fine details. However, extremely small text or delicate elements may need to be adjusted to ensure they can be cut, weeded, applied, and remain durable over time.
As a general guide, we can work with elements as small as approximately 2mm, depending on the design and vinyl selected. If your artwork contains very small text, thin lines, or a large number of intricate details, we recommend contacting us before ordering so we can review the design and advise on the best approach.
What colours are available?
We offer a wide range of vinyl colours in gloss and matt finishes, along with premium metallic options including gold, silver and bronze.
Will the colour look exactly the same as on my screen?
Colours displayed online are indicative only. Actual vinyl colours may vary slightly due to screen settings, lighting conditions and manufacturing variations.
What if you don't have the colour I'm looking for?
We stock a wide range of colours, but if you have a specific shade in mind, we may be able to source a custom vinyl colour for you. Custom colour orders will incur an additional charge, as we need to bring in a dedicated roll of vinyl - contact us for details.
We also have access to some colours and remnant stock that aren't listed on our website. If you contact us with your preferred colour or reference, we'll be happy to check what options are available and help find the closest match.
How quickly will my order be shipped?
Most vinyl lettering orders are manufactured and dispatched within 1-2 business days. Shipping times vary depending on your location.
What designs work best for vinyl lettering?
Bold text, simple logos, clean shapes and solid colours generally produce the best results. Complex gradients, photographs and highly detailed artwork are not suitable for cut vinyl lettering.
Can I include multiple words or designs within a single order?
Absolutely. You can arrange multiple words, phrases, or design elements within a single print size, and we encourage customers to make efficient use of the available space.
Our pricing is based primarily on the overall size of the graphic, with the expectation of a reasonable level of design complexity. For example, several larger, simple designs grouped within one layout are generally no problem.
However, if a design contains a large number of small, separate, or highly detailed elements, production time can increase significantly due to the additional cutting, weeding, and handling required. In these cases, additional charges may apply, or we may be unable to produce the job under our standard pricing.
